10 Qualities of a Good Christian

Have you ever wondered what truly defines a good Christian? 🤔 We live in a world where faith is often challenged and misunderstood, so it's crucial to recognize the qualities that set genuine followers of Jesus Christ apart. The characteristics we’ve outlined in this article not only shape our spiritual journey but also impact our relationships and interactions with others.

The qualities of a good Christian are Biblically based and serve as a beacon of light that stands out in a sometimes dark world, reflecting the nature and character of Jesus Christ. Whether you're a mature believer or just started your Christian journey, these ten essential qualities can provide valuable insights into the Christian way of life.

As we explore the 10 Qualities of a Good Christian, we invite you to examine your own life and see how much it aligns with these Christian qualities. Each quality offers a unique perspective on what it means to live a life guided by Christian principles and values. But before we delve into these characteristics we should clarify exactly who we are referring to as a “Christian”.

Who is a Christian?

In this article, when we refer to a Christian, we are talking about one who believes in Jesus Christ and has accepted His gift of salvation by confessing Him as Savior and Lord.

This is consistent with Romans 10: 9-10 (NIV) - “9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Now that we have defined who a Christian is, according to the Bible, let us look at each of these 10 qualities of a good Christian, which are supported in Scripture.

1. Faith in God

The first quality of a good Christian that we want to look at is “Faith in God”. This is foundational as it is fundamental. Without faith in God, you really cannot be a Christian at all, much more a good Christian. Let’s explore what it means to have Faith in God.

A. Believing in God's existence

Faith in God begins with the fundamental belief in His existence. This cornerstone of Christianity is not just an intellectual opinion but a deep-rooted Biblical principle, expressly declared in Scripture. Hebrews 11: 6 says - “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that He exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

So, believing that God exists is the starting point of faith. But there is more to Faith in God than this. You must also trust Him and His plan for your life.

B. Trusting in His plan

Once a Christian believes in God's existence, the next step is to trust in His divine plan. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Trusting in God’s divine plan for your life involves:

1. Accepting that God has a purpose for one's life

2. Believing that God's plan is ultimately for our good

3. Surrendering personal desires to align with God's will

4. Finding peace in uncertain circumstances, by completely relying on God.

To truly trust in God’s plan for your life, you must believe that He wants the best for you. He reassures us of this throughout the Scriptures. But faith requires that you accept it and live accordingly.

So, if you believe that God exists and you trust His plan for your life, then rely on Him to guide you in fulfilling His plan and purpose for your life. His plan is like the road map to your destiny and His guidance is like the GPS that gives you directions and keeps you on course.

C. Relying on His guidance

In the Scripture referenced above (Proverbs 3: 5-6), we are told to submit to Him in all our ways and He will direct our path. Relying on God's guidance is a practical manifestation of faith. It involves:

  • Seeking wisdom through prayer and Scripture study
  • Being open to divine promptings and inspiration
  • Making decisions based on biblical principles
  • Trusting God's timing and direction, even when it differs from personal expectations.

When we cultivate these three (3) aspects of faith, we demonstrate trust in God's sovereignty and goodness. This faith forms the foundation for other qualities that characterize a good Christian. Let’s continue our discussion of the 10 Qualities of a Good Christian, as we examine the next fundamental quality - “Love for God and Others”.

2. Love for God and Others

In Mark 12: 30, Jesus expressly tells us that the greatest commandment is to: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

He further declares in verse 31 (of Mark 12) that - “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

How Do We Love God?

Loving God is not complicated. The Bible tells us clearly how to love God. In John 14:15 Jesus plainly says: “If you love me, keep my commands.” His commands are contained in His Word, the Holy Bible.

So, how do we keep His Word? Firstly, you must know it. We must take time to regularly read the Bible and meditate on the Scriptures. But it doesn’t stop there. You must also do what His word says. James 1: 22 puts it this way: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Now that we understand how to love God, let us look at how to love others.

How Do We Love Others?

Matthew chapter 25, from verses 31 to 46, gives a good idea of how we should express love to others.

In this Bible account, Jesus says the sheep will be separated from the goats. The sheep will be commended and rewarded for their compassion and care for the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and the imprisoned. Conversely, He chided and punished those (the goats) for failing to exercise care and compassion for His people.

Jesus declared that when we show care and compassion for those in need, we do it for Him.

In the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), Jesus lets us know that we should love our neighbor as ourselves. In the parable, He gives a telling example of how the Samaritan extended compassion and care for a man who was wounded by robbers.

Practicing compassion

From the Scriptures, it is clear that compassion is at the heart of Christian love. It involves empathizing with others' struggles and taking action to alleviate their suffering. So, as Christians, we are called to:

  • Show empathy towards those in need
  • Offer support and comfort to the hurting
  • Actively seek ways to help others

By extending care and compassion towards others, Christians demonstrate their love for God and others in practical, meaningful ways. This love serves as a powerful testimony to their faith and can positively impact both individuals and communities.

  • Offer emotional support and encouragement to those going through difficult times

When Christians cultivate a spirit of generosity, they not only obey God's commandments but also reflect His loving and giving nature to the world around them.

4. Humility

Humility is a virtue that causes Christians to recognize that no matter their achievements, possessions, or status, they have no special importance that makes them superior to others. It causes them to maintain a modest opinion of their own importance.

How do we cultivate such a virtue? Here are some suggestions:

  • Studying scripture for guidance on righteous living

By recognizing our flaws, we open ourselves to God's transformative work in our lives.

A. Enduring trials with grace

Patience is a virtue that shines brightest during times of adversity. Enduring trials with grace is a hallmark of a good Christian, demonstrating unwavering faith and trust in God's plan. This trust in God's plan fosters a sense of peace and contentment, allowing believers to resist the urge to rush or force outcomes.

C. Staying calm in difficult situations

Exercising patience also involves the ability to remain calm amidst chaos. It is a powerful testament to one's faith and character. Good Christians strive to maintain their composure, serving as a beacon of peace in turbulent times. This calmness not only benefits the individual but also positively influences those around them, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and hope.

Now that we've explored the importance of patience in a Christian's life, we'll examine another fundamental quality of a good Christian - Prayerfulness.

Now that we've explored the transformative power of forgiveness, let's examine the last quality on our list of 10 qualities of a good Christian - Joyfulness!

10. Joyfulness

Joyfulness is a choice that we make, not based on existing circumstances but on our place in Christ. In Philippians 4: 4 we are encouraged to: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

So, how do Christians cultivate joyfulness?

  • Perform random acts of kindness
  • Share personal testimonies of God's goodness
  • Be a listening ear for those in need

Maintaining a cheerful attitude in adversity

  • Focusing on God's promises rather than circumstances
  • Practicing gratitude even in challenging situations
  • Seeking support from fellow believers
